“Pare, panalo! Panalo talaga ‘to!” (This (concert) is great! This is really great!) the guy on my left kept on saying as the Deftones were midway the concert, while the guys on my right were slamming in the mini mosh pit they’ve created. It was my second time to watch Deftones live, the first time was their Diamond Eyes tour, so it did not come as a surprise to me on what kind of performance they will show and how it would affect the crowd.
It was a week when Habagat lashed its fury in the Philippines and had hard hit Manila with torrential rains and floods, ironically came in line also with a series of great concert line-ups of foreign artists that will make you choose between safety and madness of going just to watch your favorite band. Smart Araneta Coliseum featured bands – from Smashing Pumpkins (which I regretfully missed), Snow Patrol and the 80’s cult classic Tears for Fears with Per Sorensen of Fra Lippo Lippi.
Friday, August 10, we went to watch Tears for Fears. Sans my DSLR, I settled to borrow a Panasonic Lumix camera to get a few decent shots from the bleachers area.
Tears for Fears is composed of English rock duo – Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. They were also joined by an emerging artist Carina Round during the show.
For it seemed to be an all too familiar scene and all too familiar crowd for these British duo that are not only performing but also enjoying themselves while occasionally interjecting humour and English wit. But why would they not be that comfortable? It’s already their 3rd time to visit the vibrant concert scene here in the Philippines and we Filipinos can’t seem to get enough of them and their music.
China Crisis is back in Manila for the 2nd time this year first performing at SMX Convention Center last September 9, 2011 and capping it off at Hard Rock Cafe Makati last September 11.
One of the leaders of the so-called New Romantics Movement – China Crisis, with Gary Daly on vocals and Eddie Lundon on guitars, brought back the 80’s new wave nostalgia with their hits “wishful thinking” , “Black Man Ray” and “African and White” among others.
Come start of the year 2011, there had been rumors of foreign bands coming to Manila. Bands that I only dreamt of watching when I was still in college. To start the year off, Deftones was finally confirmed to be performing in Manila on February 12, 2011 at the World Trade Center.
